Živela je grofinja, od sile bogata, še bolj pa skopa. Imela je tri postarene hčere, takšen cvet so bile kakor mati. Mati in hčere niso ves ljubi dan nič drugega počele, kakor da so čuvale svoje zaklade. Imele so trdno klet, izkopano v živo skalo, v tej kleti pa so stale tri silne železne skrinje, vzidane v tla. V prvi skrinje je bil zlat denar, v drugi bel, v tretji pa rdeč denar; in vse tri so bile do vrha polne. Na težkih pokrovih pa so sedele hčere, na vsakem ena. Skrinje so bile zaklenjene, ključe pa je na golem vratu nosila mati grofinja, ki je od zore do mraka prežala okoli gradu in podila berače, če je katerega zaneslo proti gradu.

Komaj so si privoščale kruha te bogate reve in niso popravljale ne streh, ne oken; in dež, sneg in vihar so gospodarili po stopnicah in hodnikih, kakor jih je bila volja. Neki dan je stara grofinja sedela pred gradom na soncu, od same lakote je zadremala, kar jo zbudi berač, ki je ob palici pristokal do gradu. Globoko se ji je klanjal in preponižno jo je prosil za božji dar, za majhen denar.

There was a countess, a quite rich one and even more stingy. She had three old daughters with the same character as mother. Mother and daughters did nothing but protect their treasures all day long. They had a solid basement, dug into a real rock, and in this basement there were three powerful iron chests built into the ground. In the first chest was gold money, in the second was white and in the third was red money; and all three were full to the top. And on the heavy lids, there were daughters sitting on each one. The chests were locked, the keys were carried on the bare neck by mother countess, who preyed on the castle from dawn until dusk and chased away beggars if they drifted towards the castle.
